A family is a basic social unit of a society.
Society, to be functional, must support and abide by a healthy social contract at all levels.
In some societies, the nuclear biological family might be complimented or replaced by quasi families or other small social orders that serve the same basic functional purpose.
They all involve certain social contracts that are consistent and harmonious throughout the society.
It is these social contracts that hold them together.
