Members of a functional family are parties to a social contract that creates among them a common interest shared by all. This collective interest encompasses the best interests of the family, as a group and, necessarily, each individual member of the family, as an integral part of the family unit. As such, family members have a relationship to each other that is similar, on certain levels, to partners in a business partnership. However, this similarity is not the end-all or the defining limit of duties family members have to each other.
